"Here at HiLine Lake Lodge, we get a lot of questions about our area and our services. Below are a few of the most common....
If you have a question not covered in FAQ, drop us a line, we will be more than happy to get back to you with an answer!"
Q... Do I need a passport to come to HiLine Lake Lodge? A... No, not generally. If you choose to drive to Anchorage from the US or Canada, or fly in from another country, yes, you will need your passport. If you fly in to Anchorage from the US though, you have no need for a passport - Alaska is part of the United States. Q... Alaska has 6 months of day and 6 months of night right? A... No, not true. South Central Alaska, where we are located, has very long summer days (on average 17 hours of daylight) and short winter days, but at no point do we ever have 24 hours of light or dark. Q...What about bears? Will I see polar bears?Black bears? Brown bears? Are they dangerous? A... You will not see polar bears, we are too far south. You may see brown and black bears, and yes, they can be as dangerous as any other wild animal; however following camp rules and being aware and prepared greatly reduces the risk of bear/ human conflict. You will be given a crash course on bear country rules upon arrival, and when you are out hiking or fishing, we will supply you with bear bells and pepper spray repellent. All guides carry a firearm as well. Q...What about the bugs? I have heard that they are REALLY bad? A...At certain times of the year, the mosquitos can be quite bothersome. Usually a good insect repellent is enough to keep you comfortable. Q... What do you do for lights? phones? internet? A... HiLine Lake Lodge uses wind and solar power with a gas generator back up. We do have a telephone and internet access if you need it, and many cell phones get service at the lake. Though we are in the bush, we are not without all modern conveniences. Q... What should I pack? A...That depends totally on the time of year and what you plan on doing during your stay. With your reservation confirmation you will get a suggested packing list with general guidelines that should help you to pack properly for your trip. Q... Can I see the Northern Lights from the lodge? A... Though the Northern Lights are active all year, they are only visible when the Alaska sky is dark enough. The best chance for viewing is from late August to early April. Q... Where can I get things that I forgot to pack or don't want to bring from home? A... We always recommend an overnight stay in Anchorage before flying to the lodge. Anchorage is a large modern city, with stores, banks, and fast food just like any other. Anything you may have forgotten or want to bring along to the lodge is available in the city.
